Sushi Ingredients

  • 2 cups sushi rice Use sushi rice for the right texture.
  • 2.5 cups water Necessary for cooking the rice.
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar For seasoning the rice.
  • 2 tablespoons sugar To balance the flavors.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Enhances overall flavor.
  • 1/2 pound cooked shrimp Can substitute with any cooked protein.
  • 1/2 piece cucumber Thinly sliced for filling.
  • 1 avocado Diced for filling.
  • Nori sheets Cut into small strips for garnish.
  • Sesame seeds For garnish.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
  • In a pot, combine the rinsed rice and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and cover.
  • Cook for about 20 minutes or until the rice is tender.
  • In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Microwave for about 30 seconds until the sugar dissolves.
  • Once the rice is cooked, transfer it to a bowl. Pour the vinegar mixture over the rice and gently fold it in with a spatula. Let the rice cool.

Assembly

  • Once cool, wet your hands to prevent sticking. Take a small amount of rice and flatten it in your palm.
  • Place a piece of shrimp, cucumber, or avocado in the center. Mold the rice around the filling to form a ball shape.
  • Repeat this process until all rice is used.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds and nori strips if desired.

Notes

Serve sushi balls on a plate with some soy sauce on the side for dipping. Add pickled ginger and wasabi for extra flavor. Best eaten within a day or two; avoid freezing.
